Sustainable deodorant, let’s go wild!

Honestly, sustainable deodorant wasn’t on my list of things I needed to look into.

I grew up in the 80’s / 90’s where men washed their face with water, splashed on aftershave and honestly didn’t give a shit about personal grooming, especially deodorant.

The only real requirement, does it work?

A new sustainable deodorant

So there I was, minding my own business on Instagram, when, boom a Wild advert shows up.

Wild sustainable deodorant

We are Wild

Our mission is to shake up the throwaway culture of everyday bathroom products. Through our wildly sustainable products, we hope to redefine the future of personal care.

In short, they produce, a eco-friendly product, with no harmful chemicals.

Which got me thinking…..

What chemicals are in my deodorant?

Hmmmmm, I wonder!?

Naturally I Google’d my ‘Sure for Men’ deodorant ingredients.

For fucks sake!!!

If you’re wondering just what crap is in there, here is the full list.

Butane, Isobutane, Propane, Aluminum Chlorohydrate, Cyclopentasiloxane, PPG-14 Butyl Ether, Parfum, Disteardimonium Hectorite, BHT, Propylene Carbonate, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Gelatin Crosspolymer, Cellulose Gum, Sodium Benzoate, Hydrated Silica, Aqua, Sodium Starch Octenylsuccinate, Maltodextrin, Hydrolysed Corn Starch, Silica, Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone, Benzyl Alcohol, Benzyl Benzoate, Benzyl Salicylate, , Citral, Citronellol, Coumarin, Eugenol, Geraniol, Limonene, Linalool.

I’m no chemist, but that doesn’t sound good!

Luckily I found a great website that allows you to search ingredients, and scores them 1-10, 1 considered non toxic and 10, well, yeah, you don’t want a 10 in your product.

The problem with being ‘conscious’

Aiming to have a smaller footprint on this earth and make smarter decisions, not just for myself but EVERYONE, feels like too much!

Unfortunately the truth is, we have lived in a consumer world where profits outstrip caring for the health and wellbeing of consumers, and the world at large.

Now I’d like to think we are slowly moving away from this, as shown by Wild and allbirds to name just a few.

This brings hope that things are starting to shift , but where do you start when EVERYTHING seems to be a priority??

Of course the major ones come to mind;

  • Stop eating meat
  • Lower the use of plastics
  • Buy products that are sustainable
  • Drive electric

And that can be REAL daunting.

Here’s how I’m dealing with it all.

I am making small changes, often.

Like anything, the compound effect of a little change, over time, leads to larger and more meaningful impact, don’t get lost in the desire to correct everything in one foul swoop, unless, that is, you have the income at your disposal, then, go for it!!

I digress, let’s get back to being Wild about sustainable deodorant

Starter pack ordered, nice and easy.

A few days later it arrived.

As previously mentioned, deodorant was never on my list of things to have any impact on the world or my underarm.

The experience of buying deodorant was always one of necessity, however, when you spend £12, and said deodorant turns up in a nice little box, with a non-plastic case, well, it makes it feel just a little bit special.

With simple instructions only a baffoon could get wrong, I proceed to confirm.

I am a baffoon!

What would take a normal person 2 seconds to load up the case, took me 5 minutes of unjamming the deodorant stick.

Once that crisis was avoided, the rest was plain sailing.

Does a deodorant without chemicals work?!

This is perhaps where I really can give a decent perspective on the subject of whether Wild deodorant works.

Not that I smell!

But I do sweat like a Mother F’er when training, and my current workouts involve anywhere between 1 to 2 hours of hauling weights around outside.

Needless to say, I sweat profusely.

But, I have to be honest, I would argue, the ingredients or witchcraft they poured into this stuff works better than ANYTHING i’ve used before.

Honestly, I find myself confused as to why I’m so taken aback, and i think it goes back to my opening statement.

Sustainable deodorant really wasn’t on my list of items I needed, or that would help have an impact on the environment.

Nevertheless it REALLY does work, and I would highly recommend.
